You might remember, some time earlier this year Kelli and I have a quilt that was featured in Quilty magazine. ?I think it was the January/February issue. ?Here’s a picture of that quilt. ?We had used the Moda fabric line Wren’s Friends. ?Both Kelli and I loved the fabric.
When we sewed our version we made it and saved the bonus triangles. ?You can see them all boxed up waiting for inspiration. ?Well one day, inspiration struck.
I took all those triangle pieces and created this…a beautiful 45 1/2″ x 45 1/2″ baby quilt.
I have to say, it’s once of my favorite projects that I have recently done.
It’s quite unusual for me, typically I draw what I am hoping to create on the computer before I begin sewing. ?This time everything was dictated by the size and the left over fabric that I had. ?I wanted to use up everything that I could. ?The star had to be brown as that is what I had an amount of fabric from. ?The star had to have a four patch in the middle because I didn’t have enough of any one fabric to make the star all the same color. ?These challenges made working on this quilt lots of fun.
I quilted it with brown thread. ?That was a debate on my part. ?If the quilting is successful the contrasting color typically looks really good..but it the quilting is bad, there is no hiding it.
In the end, I am very happy with it. ?In fact, I wish you could all see it in person. ?It’s some of the best quilting I feel I’ve done.
I am adding a link to the Youtube video that shows how to do the free motion quilting. This is my current favorite design. ?It’s the same design I used on our ?free pattern, Jimmy John. ?You can see that here.
All in all, I am extremely happy with how this little project turned out. ?I did use leftovers of a sheet for the backing. ?It’s just a solid brown.
Here is Ruby showing off the quilt… ?Can you believe that are no scraps to speak of left over from the project. ?I had hoped to use the aqua color for the binding but there just wasn’t enough. ?Then I thought if there was enough I would make a scrappy binding-nope. ?It turns out there was enough of the brown sheet. ?It isn’t a perfect match but still really good.
Kelli and I did write some instructions to make the quilt. ?I think it would make a fun two color quilt too. ?Anyway, you can find the FREE printable instructions here.
